Life and Career of Vitaliy Oleksandrovych Shevchenko

Born in Zolotonosha, Vitaliy Oleksandrovych Shevchenko was a renowned Ukrainian and Soviet physicist who became an academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

Education and Research

After graduating from the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Kharkiv National University in 1940, Shevchenko embarked on a distinguished research career. From 1946 to 2005, he worked at the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology while concurrently holding a position at Kharkiv National University from 1949 to 1972. In 1963, he attained the title of Professor at Kharkiv University.

Scientific Contributions

Shevchenko made significant scientific contributions, including:
Discovery of Element 112
Co-discovery of beam-plasma instability (with A.I. Akhiezer)
Invention of variable-phase focusing in accelerators
Co-discovery of parametric Cerenkov radiation (with N.A. Khizhnjak)
Discovery of radiation in artificial anisotropic dielectrics

Co-laying the foundation for collective acceleration methods (with G.I. Budker and V.I. Veksler)
