Yakov Khodyakov: Russian Merchant and Philanthropist
Early Life and EducationYakov Khodyakov was born in 1848 into a merchant family in the village of Alekseevka, near Taganrog. His father, Osip Ivanovich Khodyakov, was a merchant of the Second Guild. Yakov received a home education.
Business Career
Khodyakov began his entrepreneurial career alongside his father in Rostov-on-Don, initially focusing on bread-making. In 1880, he built his first flour mill and eventually became the owner of a network of steam-powered roller mills in Rostov, Vladikavkaz, and Armavir. By 1913, his mills processed a combined volume of 192 tons of grain per day.
Civic Involvement
Khodyakov resided in Rostov, where he served three terms as a member of the City Duma. He was actively involved in public, charitable, and educational organizations, including the Accounting Committee of the City Public Bank. His sons managed his businesses in other cities.
Legacy in Vladikavkaz
Ilya Yakovlevich Khodyakov, one of Yakov's sons, lived permanently in Vladikavkaz. He held multiple terms as a member of the City Duma, was a member of the Vladikavkaz Mutual Credit Society, and served as treasurer of the Vladikavkaz Racing Society. In 1908, Khodyakov constructed an opulent mansion on land inherited from his father. During the Civil War, it housed a printing press and the headquarters of the Red Army.
