The Most Famous Japanese Teacher of Goju-Ryu Karate
Early Life and TrainingGo Yamaguchi (1909-1989), known as "The Cat," was born in Osaka, Japan. As a young boy, he studied kenjutsu under Kiрино Toshiaki of the Jigen school. After seeing a demonstration by Shuri-te master Anko Azato, Yamaguchi became interested in karate and began training under Maruto, an Okinawan martial artist, in 1922.
In 1929, Yamaguchi met Chojun Miyagi, who became his influential mentor and taught him Goju-Ryu karate. Yamaguchi dedicated himself fully to the style, attending university in Kyoto and developing his skills through rigorous training.
Wartime Service and Imprisonment
In 1938, Yamaguchi was sent to Manchuria as part of Japanese intelligence operations. Legends abound about his feats during this period, including duels, animal fights, and resistance to torture while being held by the Soviet Union from 1945-1947.
Post-War Legacy
Foundation of the Goju-Ryu Karate AssociationAfter escaping from captivity, Yamaguchi returned to Japan and established the Goju-Ryu Karate Association. He organized numerous tournaments and revived the traditional "uchi-deshi" system of elite disciples at his Tokyo dojo.
Views on Competition
Although Yamaguchi held traditional views on karate as a life-or-death combat art, he nonetheless emphasized success in tournament matches for his students.
Personal Character and Spiritual Practices
Yamaguchi had a complex personality, known for both his pugnacious nature and his interest in mysticism. He often retreated to the mountains for solitary meditation, particularly practicing the kata Sanchin.
Later Life and Legacy
Yamaguchi died on May 20, 1989. His organization, now led by his three sons and two daughters, continues to spread Goju-Ryu karate worldwide. Yamaguchi remains a revered figure in the history of martial arts.
