Jan Borisovich Frid (real name Yakov Borukhovich Fridland) was born in Krasnoyarsk. He graduated from the directing department of the Leningrad Theater Institute in 1932, and in 1938 - the Film Academy at VGIK, where his mentor was Sergei Eisenstein. From 1938, the director began working at the "Lenfilm" studio, where he made his debut with a short film based on A.P. Chekhov's story "Surgery". He then directed the children's adventure film "Patriot".
Early Career and Notable Works
In the early 1950s, Jan Frid made documentary films, and in 1953 he directed the film-play "Love of Yarovaya". In 1955, he adapted Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" with a brilliant cast including Mikhail Yanshin, Clara Luchko, Alla Larionova, Vasily Merkurev, Georgy Vitsin, and Bruno Freindlich.
Later Career
Later in his career, Frid directed films of various genres, but starting from the 1970s, he actively worked in the genre of musical cinema, directing the film "Farewell to St. Petersburg" about Johann Strauss' stay in Russia. Jan Frid achieved tremendous success after the release of the magnificent "Dog in the Manger", based on Lope de Vega's play, starring Mikhail Boyarsky and Margarita Terekhova. His other films, such as "Die Fledermaus" with Yuri and Vitali Solomin, Lyudmila Maksakova, and a constellation of comedy actors, "Silva" with Ivars Kalnins, and "The Pious Martha" with Margarita Terekhova and Emmanuil Vitorgan, were warmly received by the audience.
Teaching Career
It is also worth noting Frid's great pedagogical activity - for many years he taught at the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music, and Cinema, as well as at the Leningrad Conservatory.
