Early Life and Military Service
Born in Kibbutz Nahalal, Israel, Yehonatan Geffen was drafted into the Israeli army in 1965. He served as a paratrooper in the paratrooper brigade and later in the Golani Infantry Brigade as a lieutenant. During his military service, Geffen's mother, Aviva, passed away.
Literary Career
After his military service, Geffen published his first collection of poetry in Tel Aviv. His verses quickly gained widespread popularity in Israeli culture. At the age of 23, he traveled to London for studies. There, he received news of his sister's suicide and returned to Israel in 1972. Settling in Tel Aviv, Geffen began his long-running weekly column in the newspaper Maariv.
From the age of 19, Geffen composed children's poems that achieved immense popularity. His notable children's poetry collection includes "The Sixteenth Sheep" (1978). Additionally, Geffen has written satirical verses for adults and translated English poets and prose into Hebrew.
Show Business and Collaborations
Geffen is an active figure in Israeli show business. In 1999 and 2002, he published two books in the confessional genre, "My Dear Wife" and "Good Stuff." He has collaborated with director Eldad Ziv and singer David Broza, for whom he wrote the album "The Woman Who's with Me."
Personal Life
Geffen has been married twice. His first marriage to Nurit Makubar produced two children, Aviv and Shira, who are also active in Israeli show business.
