Countess of Nevers from 1262

Yolanda of Burgundy, the eldest daughter of Odo of Burgundy and Matilda II of Bourbon-Dampierre, became the Countess of Nevers in 1262 upon the death of her mother. As the eldest of three daughters, she inherited the counties of Nevers, Auxerre, and Tonnerre.

Dispute over Inheritance

However, Yolanda's younger sisters, Margaret and Alice, disputed her inheritance. They appealed to the French Parliament, which ruled on All Saints' Day 1273 to divide the counties. Yolanda retained Nevers, while Margaret received Tonnerre and Alice inherited Auxerre.

Marriages and Children

Yolanda's first husband, John Tristan of France, died in 1270. She remarried in 1272 to Robert III of Dampierre, the heir to the County of Flanders. From her second marriage, Yolanda had five children:

Louis I, Count of Nevers

Robert, Count of Marle
Jeanne, Abbess of Savigny
Yolanda, Lady of Enghien
Matilda, Lady of Varsberg and Darney
Legacy and Death

Yolanda ruled Nevers independently until her second marriage, bringing the county into the possession of the Dampierre family. She died in 1280, and her eldest son, Louis I, succeeded her as Count of Nevers.
