Early Life and Education
Jorma Jaakko Ollila was born on August 15, 1950, in Seinäjoki, a small town in western Finland. He excelled academically, earning a scholarship to the United World College of the Atlantic, where he completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma. He went on to earn bachelor's degrees in political science from the University of Helsinki and economics from the London School of Economics. Additionally, he obtained a master's degree in engineering physics from the Helsinki University of Technology.
Banking Career
Before joining Nokia, Ollila worked for eight years at Citibank in London and Helsinki, responsible for corporate banking. In 1985, he joined Nokia to handle international investment transactions.
Rise to Nokia CEO
Ollila became Nokia's CFO in 1986 under CEO Kari Kairamo. In 1990, he took over the mobile phone division and was appointed CEO in 1992. Upon taking the helm, Nokia was facing internal strife and financial struggles. Ollila implemented a major restructuring, transforming the conglomerate into a global leader in telecommunications and mobile phones.
Nokia Transformation
Ollila's bold leadership transformed Nokia into a mobile phone powerhouse. By focusing on innovation and customer experience, he steered the company through challenging times and established Nokia as the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. He retired from Nokia in 2012.
Post-Nokia Career
After leaving Nokia, Ollila served as Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell from 2006 to 2015. He also held senior roles in UPM-Kymmene, Otava Publishing Company Ltd., and the Bilderberg Group. In addition, he has been actively involved in Finnish political discussions and served as an officer in the Finnish military.
Recognition and Awards
Ollila has received numerous accolades, including honorary doctorates from the University of Helsinki, the Helsinki University of Technology, and the University of Vaasa. He is an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Economics and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Personal Life
Ollila is an avid supporter of Finnish culture and sports. He is married to Tuula Pusa Ollila, and they have three children.
