Early Life and Career
Born on September 5, 1990, in Bucheon, South Korea, Yuna Kim showed an early affinity for figure skating after her family relocated to Gunpo when she was six years old. Her coach recognized her exceptional talent, predicting her future success as a champion. At the age of 10, Kim executed her first triple jump, and by 12, she had mastered five different triple jumps. Her first international gold medal came at the 2002 Triglav Trophy in Slovenia.
Rise to Prominence
In 2003, Kim made history as the youngest national champion in South Korea. She claimed the title a record six times. The 2004-2005 season marked her international breakthrough, with gold and silver medals at two Grand Prix Junior events. However, her rival, Mao Asada, narrowly defeated her at the Junior Grand Prix Final and the Junior World Championships.
Undeterred, Kim triumphed in the 2005-2006 season, winning three gold medals at the Junior Grand Prix (two events and the final) and the Junior World Championships. She added two more golds in 2006 at the Trophée Eric Bompard and the Grand Prix Final in St. Petersburg.
Canadian Training Years
In March 2007, Kim relocated to Toronto to train under Brian Orser. While pursuing her studies at Korea University in Seoul, she continued her training in Canada. From 2006 to 2010, she dominated the Grand Prix Final, claiming the championship three times.
Olympic Glory and Legacy
In 2009, Kim won the World Championships and the Four Continents Championships. As a crowning achievement, she captured the Olympic gold medal in Vancouver in 2010. At the Sochi Olympics, she placed first in the short program but finished second to Adelina Sotnikova in the free skate, earning a silver medal.
Today, Yuna Kim remains an icon in South Korea. She retired from competitive skating in 2014 but continues to perform in ice shows and dedicates much of her time to philanthropic endeavors.
