Penny Coomes: British Ice Dancer

Early Life and Career

Penny Coomes, born on April 6, 1989, began skating at the age of eight. In 2005, she paired with Nicholas Buckland, whom she met at the National Ice Center in Nottingham. They made their international debut at the junior level in 2007.

Breakthrough Season

After making their senior debut in 2008, Coomes and Buckland's breakthrough season came in 2009-2010. They won the bronze medal at the British Championships and qualified for the Vancouver Olympics. At their first Olympics, they placed 20th.

Sochi Olympics and European Medal

In 2013-2014, Coomes and Buckland had a strong season. They won the Ondrej Nepela Memorial and earned a bronze medal at the European Championships. They finished 16th at the Sochi Olympics, improving upon their previous Olympic placement.

Grand Prix Medal and Coaching Change

The pair won a bronze medal at the 2014 Rostelecom Cup, their first Grand Prix medal. However, they had to withdraw from both the European and World Championships that season. In May 2015, they switched coaches to Igor Shpilband.

Injury and Return

In 2016-2017, Coomes suffered a knee injury that prevented them from competing the following season. They made a successful return in 2017-2018, winning the Nebelhorn Trophy and qualifying for the Pyeongchang Olympics.

Pyeongchang Olympics and Fifth British Title

At the 2018 Olympics, Coomes and Buckland placed 12th. They also won their fifth British championship title. In addition to their success on the ice, Coomes and Buckland announced their engagement in December 2018.
