Biography of Jung-chin Wong

Jung-chin Wong, an influential entrepreneur and founder of a massive business empire in Taiwan, was born on January 18, 1917, in a farming family that grew tea during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. He served as the chairman of the board of Formosa Plastics Corporation, one of the world's largest plastic producers, until his retirement in June 2006 at the age of 89. Wong remained the chairman of the boards of Nan Ya Plastics Corporation, Formosa Chemistry & Fibre Corporation, and Cyma Plywood & Lumber Co. Ltd, but later announced his gradual withdrawal from these positions.

Additionally, Wong served as the chairman of the Min-Chi Institute of Technology, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and Chang Gung University. He actively supported the proposal of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference to establish postal, transportation, and trade connections between Taiwan and mainland China.

Wong was married to Go Yue-lan and had two sons and eight daughters. His eldest son from his second marriage to Liao Chao, Winston Wong, co-founded Grace Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation with Jiang Mianheng, the son of former Chinese president Jiang Zemin, in 2000. Wong's daughter from his second marriage, Charlene Wong, founded First International Computer, a company involved in computer product manufacturing and electronic components. Another daughter, Cher Wang, established High Tech Computer and VIA Technologies. Among his siblings, she became the wealthiest, with Forbes estimating her fortune at $8.8 billion in 2011, making her the richest individual in Taiwan.

Jung-chin Wong passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 15, 2008, at the age of 92 in his home in Short Hills, New Jersey.
