Peter Hendy: From Business Executive to Political Advisor
Early Life and EducationPeter Hendy was born on January 10, 1962, in Brisbane. He graduated with honors from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Economics and received a scholarship to study international economic relations at the Australian National University (ANU).
Government and Policy Experience
Hendy held roles in government and policy at both the federal and state levels. He worked in the Australian Treasury, the New South Wales ministerial cabinet, and as Chief of Staff to Peter Reith, the Minister for Defence, Employment, and Education. In 1996, he contributed to the development of industrial relations reform legislation under Prime Minister John Howard.
Chamber of Commerce and Industry
In 2002, Hendy became Chief Executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). During his tenure, he advocated for improved workplace relations. In 2006, he assisted Treasurer Peter Costello with a report on Australian taxation, which formed the basis for the country's long-term tax reform.
Liberal Party Leadership
In 2008, Hendy left ACCI to become Chief of Staff to Dr. Brendan Nelson, the leader of the Liberal Party. He joined two other ACCI senior executives who had joined Nelson's team.
Board and Committee Memberships
Hendy holds board and committee positions with Standards Australia, the International Chamber of Commerce, the Australian Institute of International Affairs, Australian Made Campaign Limited, and the National Business Action Fund. He is also Governor of the National Institute of Labour Studies, Chair of the Policy Committee of the Confederation of Asia-Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and Australia's representative on the Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC) to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Personal Life and Recognition
Hendy is married with two children and lives in Queanbeyan, New South Wales. His leisure interest is collecting political biographies. In 2005, the Australian Financial Review named him one of the 'most influential people in Australian politics'.
