Early Life and Skiing Debut
Vasili Shaptsiaboi, a Belarusian visually impaired skier and biathlete, was born on December 19, 2005. Vasili's passion for skiing sparked at the tender age of six.
International Debut and Initial Success
In 2016, Vasili made his international debut with the Belarusian national team at the Vuokatti Ski Cross-Country World Cup. The following year, he participated in the FIS Para World Nordic Skiing Championships in Finsterau, Germany, where he claimed a bronze medal in the 10km free technique cross-country race. He also placed fourth in the 20km classic, fifth in the relay, seventh in the free sprint, and eighth in the 7.5km biathlon.
Paralympic Triumph in PyeongChang
Vasili's remarkable journey continued at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, where he achieved extraordinary success. Competing in both biathlon and cross-country skiing, Vasili demonstrated outstanding skill and determination.
In the biathlon events, Vasili captured two medals: a gold medal in the 12.5km race with a time of 39:23.7 and five misses, securing a narrow victory over his opponent by a mere 2.7 seconds; and a silver medal in the 7.5km race.
Vasili's triumph in the biathlon races earned him personal congratulations from the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.
In cross-country skiing, Vasili secured a silver medal in the 20km race and a bronze medal in the 10km race. He also participated in the biathlon relay team, finishing in fourth place, and placed ninth in the classical sprint.
