Yuri Koptev was born on March 13, 1940, in Stavropol, Russia. He began his education at the Riga Higher Military Aviation Engineering College in 1957. In 1960, he enrolled at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University, graduating in 1965 with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Career in the Aerospace Industry

Koptev commenced his professional career at the Lavochkin Machine-Building Plant in Khimki, Moscow Oblast. He held positions as engineer, design engineer, and brigade leader.

Ministry of General Machine Building (1969-1991)

In 1969, Koptev joined the Soviet Ministry of General Machine Building. He swiftly rose through the ranks, serving as senior engineer, department head, chief engineer, first deputy head of the Main Directorate, and head of the Main Directorate.
