Biography of Yuri Kovelenov
Yuri Kovelenov is a renowned Russian television presenter and one of the most popular hosts of the country's main program, "Vremya" (Time). Born in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, in the city of Khanty-Mansiysk, Yuri grew up in a large family with five children. Despite facing challenges in his early life, Yuri developed a passion for broadcasting and pursued a career in the media industry.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Yuri's family, although not reindeer herders as many would assume from his birthplace, were constantly on the move throughout Siberia due to his father's military career. Growing up in difficult circumstances, Yuri found opportunities to work various jobs, including night shifts at a store, digging trenches, and assisting geologists in their search for oil. However, his true passion lay in broadcasting.
After completing his schooling, Yuri enrolled in an automotive and road technical college. It was during this time that he discovered his talent for performing in amateur theater. This led him to join a local radio theater in Omsk, where he was noticed for his abilities and eventually invited to work as a announcer for Omsk Radio.
Joining Central Television
Yuri's career took a major turn when he caught the attention of a woman who saw his performance at a pioneer camp event. She recognized his beautiful voice and suggested that he try working as a television announcer for Yaroslavl Television. Intrigued by the opportunity, Yuri accepted and began working part-time as a news presenter while continuing his military service.
It was during this time that Yuri participated in a nationwide competition for Central Television. Despite concealing the fact that his wife was expecting a child, Yuri was selected as one of the professional announcers to join the prestigious network. Relocating to Moscow, Yuri and his wife exchanged their spacious Yaroslavl apartment for a small 13-square-meter room in the capital. It was there that their daughter, Marina, was born.
Career at Central Television
Yuri faced numerous challenges during his early days at Central Television. The pressure of reading hastily edited news scripts, often received just minutes before going on air, proved to be a difficult task. Mistakes were not taken lightly, as one slip-up by Yuri's colleague led to an official complaint from the Bulgarian ambassador. Despite the challenges, Yuri and his fellow announcers managed to deliver greetings to their loved ones through subtle gestures on air.
As Yuri's popularity grew, he received a substantial fan following, with numerous admirers expressing their love through letters. Some even suggested that he was too handsome for such a serious program. Yuri's career at Central Television spanned several decades, during which he witnessed significant changes in the industry and the country, ultimately earning him a place as one of the most beloved television presenters in Russia.
Life after Television
After leaving Central Television, Yuri embarked on a new journey. Despite being 64 years old, he pursued further education by completing economic courses. Currently, he works as a mediator for companies dealing with timber products and also serves as a consultant for a savings and insurance program offered by "Elides" company. Yuri's passion for literature remains strong, as he spends his mornings reading Chekhov's works and sharing his journey through the author's travel notes in Tyumen with his children.
Yuri Kovelenov continues to cherish his role as a father and strives to live a fulfilling life, unburdened by complaints about his health. He believes in living in a way that brings comfort to his children and enjoys sharing his literary adventures with them. Despite the challenges he has faced throughout his life, Yuri remains content, finding happiness in each day that he wakes up with gratitude for the opportunities life has presented him.
