Biography of Richard Gorn
Richard Gorn, an artist and choreographer, has an extraordinary name and appearance. Despite growing up in an industrial city far from show business and artistic circles, he has become one of the most unconventional Ukrainian choreographers and artists. Richard is currently applying his artistic talents in various fields. He is an artistic director for stars such as Sergey Zverev, Natalia Mogilevskaya, Olya Polyakova, and bands like 'Tatu' and 'KAMON!!!'. Gorn is the creator, choreographer, and costume designer for the ballet group PopGorn. He also hosts unique art exhibitions and is well-known to viewers as an expert on the popular show 'Supermodel po-ukrainski' (Supermodel in Ukrainian). He believes that a true artist can do anything!
Early Life and Education
Richard Gorn, whose birth name is Dmitry, was born on January 7, 1980, in Zaporizhia, a city known for its metallurgical and energy industries. However, Dmitry's true passions were reading, dancing, and drawing, with Salvador Dali's works inspiring him the most. Despite his tall stature and strong build, Dmitry pursued various styles of dance and achieved great success. Although his parents didn't support his unconventional interests, they also didn't hinder his attempts to find himself. At the age of 16, during a serious illness that left him immobile, Dmitry focused on drawing and sculpting. He realized that he had found another way to express himself and decided to forgo higher education to dedicate himself to his creative pursuits, starting with creating stage costumes.
Career and Achievements
At the age of 17, Dmitry became a choreographer and director, and also started working as a DJ at a nightclub called 'Sova' in Zaporizhia. Soon, the parties hosted by 'Dolphin' (his DJ name) started attracting more and more visitors, making the club very popular in the city. Dmitry designed and drew the decorations, created scripts, and costumes for performances. He eventually became the art director of the club. In 2000, he staged 'Bezumie prostranstva Ya' (Madness of Space I), a large-scale performance inspired by Dali's work, which was a huge success. However, Dmitry felt that his abilities and aspirations surpassed the level of the Zaporizhia nightclub and decided to try his luck in a new city.
In 2004, Dmitry moved to Kyiv, with his sketches taking up the majority of his luggage. It didn't take him long to settle in Kyiv and make a name for himself. Within a year, he was working with one of Ukraine's best dancers and choreographers, Dmitry Kolyadenko. In 2008, Richard Gorn created his own dance collective, initially named 'Free Love Party'. The first show of the new ballet was 'Alisa v strane Grotesk' (Alice in Grotesque Land), which caused a sensation in artistic circles and cemented Gorn's unofficial title as the 'King of Eccentricity'. After this, Richard signed a contract with the famous Kyiv club, 'Heaven'. Two more performances were staged as part of this collaboration: 'Gorokhovoe tsarstvo' (Pea Kingdom), featuring renowned actress and TV presenter Svetlana Volnova, and 'Otravlenie' (Poisoning). Both productions were highly successful.
After the success of these performances, Richard Gorn realized that he shouldn't limit himself to club productions and began working independently. His new performance, 'PopGorn,' was immensely popular in Kyiv and was shown during international tours, including Moscow. In 2011, it won the 'Crystal Awards' for 'Best Ballet'. Establishing himself as a high-class professional, Richard Gorn didn't forget about other creative pursuits. He started collaborating with 'Novyi kanal' (New Channel) of Ukrainian television, becoming a participant and host of the project 'Shoumaniia' (Showmania). Additionally, he organized an exhibition of his own artwork inspired by Salvador Dali, titled 'Polet pchely vokrug menya' (The Flight of the Bee Around Me). According to Dmitry, he created the seventeen works for this exhibition in just two days. The exhibition took place in 2014 in one of Kyiv's restaurants because Gorn believes that art is not meant for museum halls and that paintings are best displayed outdoors, in plain view of passersby.
In the same year, the well-known choreographer auditioned for the role of an expert on the TV show 'Super-Model po-ukrainski' (Supermodel in Ukrainian) on the 'Novyi kanal'. He was selected as part of a team consisting of celebrities such as photographer Sonya Plakidiuk, supermodel Alla Kostromicheva, and model scout Sergey Nikityuk. Richard quickly adapted to the new environment and easily connected with everyone. One of the most unconventional participants on the show was Vlada Rogovenko, who struggled with a small height for a model and a complex personality due to a difficult childhood and adolescence. During filming, it was revealed that Vlada had not been baptized, and Richard, a deeply religious person, offered to become her godfather.
Richard Gorn developed a close relationship with the vibrant and unconventional Sonya Plakidiuk. They were often seen together, and Richard painted several portraits of Sonya. However, rumors of a romantic relationship between Plakidiuk and Gorn turned out to be false. Since 2010, Richard had been in a relationship with singer Masha Fokina, although they both stated that marriage was not on the cards, and eventually they parted ways. There were also rumors of a romance between Gorn and one of the participants of 'Supermodel,' Victoria Maremukha, which had no basis. For now, Richard enjoys his bachelorhood and takes care of his pets – two dogs, two rats, and fish. He is a true fan of Dali-inspired tattoos, with a collection of 21 tattoos. In his free time, Richard loves to travel. He dreams of going to Spain to visit his idol's museum.
