Early Life and Education

Yuriy Yekhanurov was born on August 23, 1948, in the village of Belkachy in the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. He is of Buryat ethnicity. Yekhanurov moved to Ukraine in 1963 and became a candidate of economic sciences and an associate professor. In 1973, he graduated from the Kyiv Institute of National Economy.

Career in Economics

Yekhanurov began his career in the construction industry in Kyiv in 1967. From 1993 to 1994, he served as Deputy Minister of Economy. From 1994 to 1997, he was Chairman of the State Property Fund of Ukraine. In 1997, he became Minister of Economy. He subsequently served as Chairman of the State Committee for Enterprise Development from 1997 to 1998.

Political Career

In 1998, Yekhanurov was elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. He served as Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Economic Policy, National Economy Management, and Investment. From 1999 to 2001, he worked as First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine in Viktor Yushchenko's government. In 2001, he became First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, responsible for organizational and personnel policy and regional relations.

Return to Parliament and Appointment as Regional Governor

In May 2002, Yekhanurov was elected as a People's Deputy, joining Viktor Yushchenko's "Our Ukraine" bloc. He led the Committee on Industrial Policy and Entrepreneurship. On April 1, 2005, he was appointed as Governor of the Dnipropetrovsk Region.

Prime Minister of Ukraine

On September 8, 2005, President Viktor Yushchenko appointed Yekhanurov as Acting Prime Minister of Ukraine, replacing Yulia Tymoshenko, who had led the Cabinet of Ministers since February 4, 2005.
