Stefania Prestigiacomo: A Sicilian Politician and Activist
Early Life and Political FoundationsBorn on December 16, 1966, in Syracuse, Sicily, Stefania Prestigiacomo is the niece of former Sicilian governor Santi Nicita. Initially, she voted for the Christian Democratic Party but developed a strong affinity for the Italian Radical Party. Her views leaned towards pardoning former leader of the far-left group "Lotta Continua" and supporting the distribution of contraceptives in schools.
Entry into Politics and Ministerial Positions
In 1993, Silvio Berlusconi approached Prestigiacomo at a party event and entrusted her with organizing the Siracusa chapter of the Young Industrialists' Association. This marked her entry into politics as a member of Forza Italia. From 1994 to 2006, she served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies.
From 2001 to 2006, she held the position of Minister for Equal Opportunities in Berlusconi's second and third governments. In Berlusconi's fourth government (2008-2011), she served as Minister of the Environment, Land, and Sea.
Legislative Initiatives and Activism
During her tenure as minister and deputy, Prestigiacomo supported legislation aimed at empowering women and protecting minority rights. Notable initiatives included:
- Amending Article 51 of the Italian Constitution to ensure equal access to public office for men and women
- Introducing provisions against modern slavery, discrimination based on sexual orientation and disability, and workplace harassment
Personal Life and Controversies
In 2009, Prestigiacomo faced an investigation for alleged misuse of a ministerial credit card. However, the charges were dismissed by court in 2010. She is married to notary Angelo Bellucci and has a son named Gianmaria.
Prestigiacomo's rebellious nature is evident in her upbringing and personal style. Despite being enrolled in a Catholic school, she defied authority by leaving due to dress code restrictions. Today, she often favors tailored feminine suits.
