Yousif Guseynov, a representative of Azerbaijani visual art, was born on October 15, 1928 in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR. He graduated from the Azerbaijan State Art School named after Azim Azimzadeh in 1949. In 1955, he completed his studies at the Graphics Department of the Vasily Surikov Moscow Art Institute. In 1964, he was honored with the title of Honored Artist, and in 1979, he was named People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR. In 1977, Yousif Guseynov was elected Chairman of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan. In the same year, he was appointed Secretary of the Board of the Union of Artists of the USSR. He passed away on September 1, 2009 at the age of 81.
Emergence in Graphic Art
Yousif Guseynov entered the field of Azerbaijani graphic art in the second half of the 1950s. His early independent works, which debuted at the exhibition of young artists from the Transcaucasian region in 1958, caught the attention of both viewers and critics. Guseynov initially began his artistic career as a book illustrator but soon developed an interest in other forms of graphic art, including lithography and political posters, as well as painting.
Illustrations and Book Design
Guseynov's first illustrations were commissioned by the magazine "Yunost" in Moscow. His delicate drawings for the poems of Ya. Akim impressed publishers, and he was soon entrusted with designing the book "The Happy Nail" by E. Permyak. Despite the challenges of illustrating Russian fairy tales as an Azerbaijani artist, Guseynov's talent and diligence allowed him to create illustrations that resonated with both Russian and Azerbaijani audiences.
Work in Graphic Art
Returning to Baku in 1957, Guseynov continued his productive work in book graphics. He illustrated and designed new editions of works by Azerbaijani writers, including novels by N. Narimanov and M. Aliyev, as well as selected works by A. Shaik and B. Talybly. Over the years, Guseynov expanded his techniques and experimented with various graphic approaches. He ventured into color illustration, creating watercolor drawings for children's books.
Contribution to the Artistic Community
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Yousif Guseynov played an active role in the artistic community. He served as Secretary of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan from 1970 to 1987 and Secretary of the Union of Artists of the former USSR from 1977 to 1987. He was also elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic in two separate terms. Guseynov dedicated many years to teaching, serving as a professor at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts and the Azerbaijan State Academy of Arts.
Throughout his life and career, Yousif Guseynov devoted himself to serving his homeland, developing and promoting its culture and art. His contributions to Azerbaijani graphic art and book illustration have left a lasting impact on the artistic community.
