Cuban Wrestler Leyanis Leyva Guzmán

Leyanis Leyva Guzmán is a Cuban wrestler who specializes in freestyle wrestling. She began her career in 2014, competing at the Central American and Caribbean Games. That year, she won a silver medal in the 48 kg weight class. In 2018, she returned to the Games and won a bronze medal in the 50 kg weight class.

International Success

In 2015, Guzmán represented Cuba at the Pan American Games in Toronto. She competed in the 48 kg weight class but failed to medal, losing her bronze medal match to Alyssa Lampe of the United States. The following year, she participated in the Pan American Qualification Tournament but did not qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Again, she lost her bronze medal match to Lampe.

In 2019, Guzmán achieved a major triumph by winning a silver medal in the 50 kg weight class at the Pan American Games in Lima. She also won a gold medal in the same weight class at the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires. However, she failed to medal at the World Championships, losing her first match.

Olympic Journey

In March 2020, Guzmán qualified to represent Cuba at the Summer Olympics by winning the Pan American Qualification Tournament in Ottawa. At the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, she lost in the round of 16 to Sun Yanan of China. Since her opponent reached the final, Guzmán had a chance to compete for bronze. However, she lost her repechage match to Oksana Livach of Ukraine and finished eighth overall.

2024 Olympics and Beyond

Guzmán returned to the Olympic stage at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. She competed in the 50 kg weight class and won a silver medal. In the final, she lost to Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States. Guzmán's success at the highest level cements her status as one of Cuba's most promising young wrestlers.
