Early Life and Career
Yuta Watanabe's journey in badminton began in 2005 when he joined the Kodaira Junior Club in Tokyo. His talent was evident from a young age, as he won a national competition while still in elementary school. In 2012, as a senior at Tomioka Dai-ichi Junior High School, he partnered with Arisa Higashino.
International Success
Watanabe's international debut came in June 2014 at the Japan Open, where he competed in mixed doubles with Higashino. The duo advanced to the semifinals at the Korea Junior Open later that year, showcasing their potential.
Watanabe made his breakthrough in 2015, winning the boys' doubles title at the Dutch Junior International Tournament and reaching the mixed doubles final at the Russian Open. He also claimed two titles at the Danish Junior Cup, triumphing in boys' singles and doubles.
National Team
In 2017, Watanabe was selected to represent Japan at the Sudirman Cup mixed team championship. The team reached the semifinals and secured a bronze medal.
All England Open Triumphs
Watanabe has achieved remarkable success at the All England Open, one of the sport's most prestigious events. He became the first Japanese male player to win the title in 2018, partnering with Higashino in mixed doubles. In 2020, he teamed up with Hiroyuki Endo to win the men's doubles title.
Watanabe's greatest achievement came in 2021, when he won both the men's doubles (with Endo) and mixed doubles (with Higashino) titles at the All England Open, becoming the first player in 19 years to achieve the feat.
