Biography of Yves Rocher
Yves Rocher, the founder of the internationally renowned cosmetic corporation, Yves Rocher, passed away on December 26 in France. He was hailed as a great French entrepreneur by the country's president, Nicolas Sarkozy, who expressed his condolences to the Rocher family. The official cause of Yves Rocher's death has not been announced, but preliminary reports suggest that he died of a heart attack. He was 79 years old.
Early Life and Passion for Nature
Yves Rocher was born in the small Breton town of La Gacilly, France. It was in La Gacilly, in the heart of Brittany, where his passion for the botanical world was born. As quoted by the Russian website Yves Rocher, the entrepreneur said, "In La Gacilly, at the heart of Brittany, my passion for the plant world was born."
From a young age, Rocher dedicated a large part of his life to producing cosmetics and perfumes made from natural ingredients, which were accessible to a wide range of consumers. According to a brief history on the Yves Rocher website, he even created his first herbal-based ointment as a teenager in the attic of his family home. He said, "In 1959, my village was becoming depopulated. I thought only of one thing: how to stop this? From the attic, which served as my laboratory at the time, I moved on to the creation of my own enterprise, devoted to nature and women's beauty."
Founding Yves Rocher Corporation
In 1959, Yves Rocher established the first laboratories in La Gacilly to study the properties of plants and produce the first series of Yves Rocher cosmetics. It was also during this time that Rocher came up with the idea to distribute cosmetic products by mail, which was considered a revolutionary solution at the time. The French cosmetics market was relatively closed, and not all women had access to such products.
Ten years later, Rocher opened the first Yves Rocher store in Paris. In 1970, the corporation expanded internationally by launching its first branch outside of France in Belgium. In 2000, the company ventured into online sales.
Yves Rocher Today
Currently, the Yves Rocher brand is present in over 80 countries and employs more than 15,000 staff members. The network's annual turnover exceeds two billion euros. According to the corporation's own data, one in three French women use Yves Rocher products. In France, the company ranks fifth among the most reliable and attractive employers. Worldwide, there are approximately two thousand Yves Rocher stores and beauty salons. The first Yves Rocher store in Russia opened in 1991, and the number of network outlets has now reached 145.
Under the Yves Rocher brand, around 700 types of cosmetic products are produced, including skincare and body care products, perfumes, and makeup. The company annually sends out 26 million orders by mail. Recently, the network underwent a rebranding, updating its logo.
Public Work and Honors
Aside from his entrepreneurial activities, Yves Rocher was actively involved in public work. From 1962 to 2008, he served as the mayor of La Gacilly for 46 years. In this position, he contributed to the creation of the Yves Rocher Botanical Garden in his hometown in 1975. In 1998, together with the National Museum of Natural History, he founded the Vegetarium, the first European museum dedicated solely to plants.
Rocher was also honored with France's highest civilian award, the Legion of Honor. In the Yves Rocher empire, his grandson, 31-year-old Bris Rocher, has been chosen as the new leader. Yves Rocher himself appointed his successor four years ago.
