Biography of Zakhar Shibeko
Zakhar Shibeko is a Belarusian historian and professor, born on July 30, 1948, in the village of Osinovka, Belitsky Rural Council, Sennensky District, Vitebsk Oblast. He completed his studies at the History Faculty of the Belarusian State University in 1972, defended his candidate dissertation in 1977, and his doctoral dissertation in 1998. In 2003, he was awarded the title of professor.
Academic Career
From 1972 to 1974, Shibeko worked as a history teacher. He then became a research fellow at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR from 1974 to 1991. From 1991 to 1998, he served as the head of the Belarusian Studies Department at the National Scientific and Educational Center named after F. Skorina.
In 1999, Shibeko became the director of the National Museum of History and Culture of Belarus. Since 2000, he has held the position of professor at the Belarusian State Economic University, teaching Belarusian history and foreign countries' history.
From September 2001 to September 2002, Shibeko also served as the acting editor-in-chief of the journal "Spadchyna" ("Heritage"). His research interests include the study of Minsk in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, Belarusian cities from 1861 to 1904, and the Belarusian national movement in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Publications and Awards
Shibeko has authored over 200 scientific publications. His work on the history of Belarus in the 19th and 20th centuries has been recognized with the award of the Polish journal "Przegląd Wschodniego" in 2001 and the Francysk Skaryna Belarusian PEN Center Award in 2003. He is a member of the International Association of Belarusian Studies and the Belarusian Historical Society.
Some of his notable monographs include "Minsk at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries: An outline of socio-economic development," "Minsk: Pages of the pre-revolutionary city" (co-authored with S. Shibeko), "Cities of Belarus (1860s-early 20th century)," "History of Belarus: 1795-2000" (in Polish), "An outline of the history of Belarus: 1795-2002," and "History of Belarus" (in Czech, co-authored with Gennady Saganovich).
In 2007, Shibeko published "Minsk 100 Years Ago" which explores the history of Minsk.
