Biography of Zawisza the Black
Zawisza the Black was a Polish knight and diplomat of the first half of the 15th century. He was a symbol of chivalry and nobility.
Service under Sigismund
Zawisza served in the armies of Emperor Sigismund of the Holy Roman Empire. When he heard of Jagiellonians' campaign against the Teutonic Order, Zawisza hurried to Poland and fought in the Battle of Tannenberg in 1410. He carried out important missions for Jagiello at the Council of Constance and with the English and French kings.
Return to the Holy Roman Empire
Later, Zawisza returned to the service of the Holy Roman Empire. He gained a reputation as an invincible knight at the tournament in Perpignan, knocking famous knight John of Aragon out of his saddle with a single lance strike. Unfortunately, Zawisza perished in an attempt to liberate the Golubac Fortress from the Turks on the Danube in 1428.
