Early Life and Football BeginningsJosé dos Santos Lopes, affectionately known as Zeka Lopes, was born in Batatais, Brazil, on November 1, 1910. Despite growing up in a poor and large family, Zeka found solace in football. At the tender age of 9, he became an apprentice stonemason while continuing his passion for the sport. In 1928, he joined Batatais' main team as a winger.
Move to Corinthians and Championship Success
In 1931, the well-known Corinthians scout Cinézio Barros spotted Zeka's talent and convinced him to join the legendary São Paulo club. For the next nine years, Zeka played a crucial role in Corinthians' successes, helping them win four Campeonato Paulista (São Paulo State Championship) titles.
International Career with Brazil
Zeka Lopes made seven appearances for the Brazilian national team, including three games at the 1938 FIFA World Cup in France. He featured in matches against Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Spain.
Retirement and Business Ventures
A knee injury suffered in a friendly match against his former club Batatais in 1941 ended Zeka's playing career. However, he returned to his first passion, construction. Using the wealth he had accumulated during his football days, he established a successful construction firm with his wife.
Later Life and Legacy
