Biography of Zhang Jiao

Leader of the Yellow Turban Rebellion

Zhang Jiao was one of the leaders of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, which erupted in China from 184 to 204 AD and effectively marked the end of the Han Dynasty and the beginning of the Three Kingdoms period. He was considered a follower of Daoism and a powerful sorcerer. Zhang Jiao met his demise in battle against imperial troops in 184 AD.

The Path of the Yellow Sky

Claiming to be the grandson of Daoist patriarch Zhang Daoling, the founder of the Way of the Celestial Masters, Zhang Jiao bestowed upon himself the title of Great Teacher. He led the Yellow Turbans alongside his younger brothers Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang, organizing a movement known as the Path of the Yellow Sky or the Path of Peace and Prosperity. Zhang Jiao and his brothers commanded their own military forces, primarily composed of peasants, but distinguished themselves with excellent organization and large numbers. Zhang Liang was named General of the Earth, Zhang Bao was called General of the People, and Zhang Jiao held the title of General of the Sky.

Causes of the Rebellion

The uprising was primarily triggered by burdensome taxes, corruption, famine, and floods, which the common people interpreted as signs that the supreme ruler from the Han Dynasty had lost his divine power and, therefore, his reign must come to an end. Due to the well-organized and widespread military forces of the rebels, which spanned across the entire empire, the Yellow Turbans initially achieved success. However, when the government sought the assistance of powerful and talented military strategists from the military aristocracy, such as Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and Sun Jian, the incompetence of the rebellion's leaders as military generals became evident. Although the Yellow Turbans managed to resist even their most powerful enemies for many years, the internal conflicts among the rebels escalated after the death of their leader Zhang Jiao, leading to the suppression of the rebellion.

In Popular Culture

Zhang Jiao became one of the characters in the 14th-century classic novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" by Luo Guanzhong. The novel intertwines historical events with fictional elements, and the characters are heavily romanticized and idealized compared to their historical counterparts. Nevertheless, Zhang Jiao and the other characters from the novel, including Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang, became part of Chinese culture in this form. In the novel, Zhang Jiao is portrayed as a powerful Daoist sorcerer who could control rain and wind. He gained his power and secret knowledge by studying the "Tai Ping Jing" treatise, which was given to him by an immortal spirit in the form of an old man. However, Zhang Jiao's storyline is short, and his death is mentioned in the second chapter.

In contemporary popular culture, Zhang Jiao appears as a character in the video game series "Dynasty Warriors" and "Warriors Orochi" developed by the Japanese company Koei. He is also one of the main characters in the non-violent shooter game "SEGA Golden Gun."
