Zheng Qinwen: A Rising Star in Chinese Tennis
Early Life and Junior CareerZheng Qinwen was born in Shiyan, Hubei province, China. She began playing tennis at the age of seven and moved to Wuhan for training two months later. At the age of 11, she relocated to Beijing to train with Carlos Rodriguez, former coach of Zheng's idol, Li Na. In 2019, Zheng moved to Barcelona, Spain with her mother. She began working with coach Pere Riba in 2021.
Professional Career
2021: WTA Tour Debut, Top 150In January 2021, Zheng won the Tennis Future Hamburg tournament in Germany. She also triumphed at the Macha Lake Open in June, defeating Aleksandra Krunic in the final. Zheng made her WTA Tour debut at the Palermo Ladies Open, where she recorded her first WTA victory against Ludmilla Samsonova.
2022: French Open Fourth Round, WTA Tour Final, and Top 25
Zheng reached her first WTA Tour semifinal at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 in January 2022. She qualified for the Australian Open and reached the second round. In March, Zheng shocked the tennis world by defeating former French Open champion Simona Halep at the French Open, advancing to the fourth round. Despite losing to top seed Iga Swiatek, Zheng broke into the top 50 and won her first WTA 125 title in Valencia. She also reached the third round at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open. Zheng ascended to a career-high ranking of 28th after reaching the final of the Pan Pacific Open in Japan, becoming the first Chinese teenager to achieve that feat. She was named WTA Newcomer of the Year for her breakthrough season.
2024: United Cup Debut, Australian Open Final, Top 10, Olympic Champion
Zheng made her United Cup debut as China's No. 1 player and led her team to the quarterfinals. At the Australian Open, she surged into her first Grand Slam final by defeating six unseeded opponents. Zheng became the second Chinese player to break into the top 10 in singles and reached a career-high ranking of No. 7. At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Zheng captured the gold medal in women's singles, making history as the first Asian player to win an Olympic tennis title in singles.
Personal Life
Zheng cites Li Na as her inspiration and credits the support of her parents for her success. She hopes to inspire young children in Asia and is a fan of K-pop group Blackpink.
