Vasily Lyuty: A Ukrainian Master of Bandura, Rock, and Folklore
Early Life and EducationVasily Lyuty (born 1972) is a Ukrainian bandurist, ethnomusicologist, rock musician, and composer with over 400 musical works to his credit. His passion for Ukrainian musical culture began at a young age, fostered by his first bandura teacher, Lydia Serhievna Shcherbak.
Lyuty studied at various musical institutions, including the Zvenigorodka Children's Music School, the Cherkasy No. 1 and Vatin Children's Music Schools, and the Kyiv State Higher Music School named after R.M. Glier. Despite facing challenges, he excelled in his studies, winning numerous awards in bandura and composition competitions.
Musical Career
Lyuty's musical journey encompasses a wide range of styles, from folk to rock. He has collaborated with renowned groups such as "Haydamaky," "Tin Sontsa," "Roverta," and "Vedy," performing his popular song "Arrow of Ares" (based on Ivan Bilyk's novel) and the classic "My Friend Koval."
Political Activism and the Maidan
Lyuty has been an active participant in various political and social movements, including "Ukraine without Kuchma," the "Revolution on Grass," and the Orange Revolution. He became a vocal supporter of the Maidan protests in 2014, performing on the Maidan stage and inspiring people with his songs.
Collaboration with Other Artists
Lyuty has collaborated with a diverse group of artists, including Taras Zhytynskyi, Taras Sylenko, the "Rutenia" band, and the creative collective "Khoreya Kozatska." He has also represented Ukraine at international festivals and events, showcasing the richness of Ukrainian culture.

Lyuty comes from a musical family with a long history of folk musicians. His wife, Oksana But, is a renowned ethnomusicologist and musician. Together, they have three daughters: Daria, Vlastymira, and Lelya.
