The Life of Blessed Zenovij Kovalyk

Blessed Zenovij Kovalyk, a priest of the Roman Catholic and Ukrainian Greek Catholic Churches, was born into a devout family.

Early Years and Vocation

Before entering the Redemptorist monastery, Kovalyk worked as a rural teacher. In 1926, he made his monastic vows and was sent to Belgium to study philosophy and theology. In 1932, he was ordained as a priest.

Priestly Ministry

Kovalyk served in Volyn under the guidance of Bishop Mykola Charnetsky. After several years, he was transferred to Stanislav (now Ivano-Frankivsk). In 1939, he moved to the Redemptorist monastery in Lviv, where he became an active pastor and the monastery's economist.

Arrest and Martyrdom

On the night of December 20-21, 1940, Kovalyk was arrested by NKVD agents. As German forces advanced on Lviv in the summer of 1941, prisoners in the Lviv prison were executed by NKVD members. Kovalyk was crucified and nailed to a wall before the eyes of the other inmates.

Beatification

On June 27, 2001, Pope John Paul II declared Zenovij Kovalyk a Blessed of the Catholic Church. His martyrdom serves as a testament to the faith of those who suffered under Soviet persecution.
