Early Life and Education
Yuri Maloev, a prominent political and social figure in South Ossetia, was born on March 17, 1925, in Tskhinvali, the capital of the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast. In 1942, he enrolled in the Physics and Mathematics Department of the A. Tibilov South Ossetian State Pedagogical Institute. During World War II, from 1942 to 1944, he served in an extermination battalion protecting the Greater Caucasus Range.
Post-War Career
After the war, Maloev resumed his studies and graduated in 1947. In 1955, he completed the Mining Department of the Tbilisi Polytechnic Institute with honors. He went on to study at the Higher Party School of the CPSU Central Committee from 1965 to 1972.
Political Leadership
Maloev held significant political positions in South Ossetia. From 1965 to 1972, he served as Deputy Chairman of the South Ossetian Regional Executive Committee. Subsequently, he became the Chairman of the Regional Economic Planning Committee from 1972 to 1977.
From April to August 26, 1991, Maloev was the First Secretary of the South Ossetian Regional Committee of the CPSU. From September 1991 to January 1992, he served as Acting Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of South Ossetia, following the arrest of the previous Speaker, Tores Kulumbegov.
Parliamentary Leadership
From 2004 to 2009, Maloev was elected as the Chairman of the Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia. In the 2009 parliamentary elections, he chose not to participate and retired from politics. His successor as Parliament Chairman was Stanislav Kochiyev.
Later Life and Death
Maloev passed away on March 6, 2016, eleven days before his 91st birthday. He left behind a legacy of service and dedication to the people of South Ossetia.
