Zoe's Story - A Fight Against a Rare and Aggressive Cancer
Zoe Daggett, a young girl from Fairport, New York, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer known as diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). DIPG affects children between the ages of 5 and 9, and only around 200-300 children are diagnosed each year in the United States.
The Diagnosis and Journey
Zoe's journey began in June 2016 when she fell in a park and started limping. After further evaluation, she was diagnosed with DIPG, which is located at the base of the brain near the top of the spine. The tumor puts pressure on a part of the brain called the pons, which controls vital functions such as breathing, sleeping, and blood pressure regulation.
Treatment and Relapse
Zoe initially underwent immunotherapy in Germany, a treatment that was successful in shrinking her tumor. However, the cancer returned, and subsequent medications proved ineffective. As the tumor progressed, it affected Zoe's ability to walk, talk, and eat.
A Final Farewell
Zoe's parents, Casey and Benjamin Daggett, remained by her side throughout her journey. In the final days of her life, they shared a tender moment on a beach, captured in a heartbreaking photograph. The image, taken by a hospice nurse, has served to bring hope and awareness to others facing similar challenges.
Zoe's Legacy
Zoe passed away peacefully on July 4, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Her parents vowed to continue spreading love and supporting families facing childhood cancer. They established the Zoe Daggett Foundation to raise awareness about DIPG and provide financial assistance to families affected by the disease.
