Zofija Mazej Kukovič: A Trailblazing Slovenian Politician
Zofija Mazej Kukovič is a prominent Slovenian woman politician who has made significant contributions to her country's healthcare system and international organizations.
Early Life and Education
Born on May 14, 1955, in Črna na Koroškem, Slovenia, Zofija Mazej Kukovič grew up in a large family in the subalpine village of Bele Vode. She completed her primary education in Šoštanj and went on to study electrical engineering at the Šolski center Velenje from 1970 to 1974. Continuing her education, she earned a degree in computer science from the Faculty of Organizational Sciences at the University of Maribor from 1976 to 1980.
Engineering Career
Mazej Kukovič began her professional career as a design engineer at the Velenje Lignite Mine Development Department in 1974. She later joined the engineering and mining equipment company ESO, where she worked as a design engineer responsible for control and regulation of technological systems. In 1992, she became the CEO of Esotech, a high-tech environmental protection engineering company.
Political and Public Service
Mazej Kukovič's political career began with the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) in 2008. She served as Minister of Health from September 2007 to November 2008. During Slovenia's presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2008, she chaired the EU Health Ministers' Council.
In 2011, she was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for the SDS, where she represented the European People's Party. She served as a Member of the European Parliament until 2014.
International Roles
Since 2016, Mazej Kukovič has been a member of the Management Board of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and in 2018, she was elected as its Vice-President. She is also a former Board Member of the Europa Donna European Breast Cancer Coalition.
