Biography of Zsa Zsa Gabor
Zsa Zsa Gabor, born Sári Gábor, was an American actress and socialite of Hungarian descent. She was born to Hungarian Jewish parents Vilmos and Jolie Gabor, and had two sisters, Magda and Eva, who also became actresses. Gabor received her nickname "Zsa Zsa" from her mother, as she couldn't pronounce her real name.
In 1936, Gabor won the "Miss Hungary" beauty contest but was disqualified for lying about her age. That same year, she went to Vienna and was noticed by tenor Richard Tauber, who invited her to sing in his operetta "Der singende Traum" at the Vienna Theater. Like many members of her family, Gabor was able to escape persecution due to her Jewish heritage by emigrating from the country.
After divorcing her first husband, a Turkish diplomat, in 1941, Gabor left Europe and followed her sister to Hollywood. She made her film debut in the romantic comedy "We're Not Married!" in 1952, and also appeared in the famous film "Moulin Rouge" that same year. Throughout her acting career, she became more active in television and often appeared as herself in movies.
Gabor's sense of humor, extravagance, and inclination for scandals and sensationalism allowed her to maintain her popularity regardless of the ups and downs of her film career. She appeared in films such as "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" (1987), "The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear" (1991), "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1992), and "A Very Brady Sequel" (1996).
Legal Troubles
On June 14, 1989, Gabor slapped a police officer, Paul Kramer, when he stopped her for a traffic violation in Beverly Hills. She defended her actions in court, claiming that the officer had exceeded his duties and behaved rudely. She was found guilty of assaulting a police officer and sentenced to 72 hours of community service in the "El Segundo" prison and fined $13,000. Gabor later mocked this incident in the film "The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear."
Health Issues
On November 27, 2002, Gabor was involved in a car accident and remained in the hospital until January of the following year. She received a $2 million insurance payout for the accident. On July 7, 2005, she suffered a stroke that put her life at risk. She was hospitalized, underwent surgery, and was discharged a week later for recovery. In September 2007, Gabor underwent another round of treatment related to her stroke.
In July 2010, Gabor was hospitalized again after a fall from her bed, resulting in several hip fractures. After a successful hip replacement surgery, she was discharged. Throughout the summer of 2010, Gabor was hospitalized multiple times due to deteriorating health. On August 15, 2010, while in critical condition, a priest was called to her hospital room for last rites. At the end of August, Gabor decided to discontinue any further treatment and was discharged to spend her final days with her family.
On November 12, 2010, Gabor was hospitalized again due to a blood clot in her leg. Doctors discovered gangrene and decided to amputate her leg below the knee. In March 2011, Gabor refused to have her other leg amputated, and doctors estimated her chances of living for at least another year at 50%. On March 23, after learning about the death of her longtime friend, Elizabeth Taylor, Gabor was hospitalized again with a severe hypertensive crisis. On May 6, 2011, she was urgently admitted to the intensive care unit of a Los Angeles hospital with severe pneumonia complications. She was placed on a feeding tube, and at the end of the month, she spent a week in a coma. Gabor passed away on December 18, 2016, at the age of 99, from cardiac arrest at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles. She was laid to rest at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery.
Personal Life
Gabor was married nine times, with seven divorces and one annulled marriage. Her husbands include Burhan Belge (1937-1941), Conrad Hilton (1942-1947), George Sanders (1949-1954), Herbert Hutner (1962-1966), Joshua S. Cosden Jr. (1966-1967), Jack Ryan (1975-1976), Michael O'Hara (1976-1982), Felipe de Alba (1983), and Frederic Prinz von Anhalt (1986 until her death). Gabor had one child, Francesca Hilton, with Conrad Hilton. She had a complicated relationship with her daughter, and they were estranged for many years. Gabor did not learn about her daughter's death until 23 months later.
