Biography of Zulfia Khanbabayeva

Zulfia Khanbabayeva is an Azerbaijani singer and People's Artist of Azerbaijan. She was born and raised in Baku and received her education at School No. 161. During her school years, she sang in the choir of Avsar Javanshir. She then enrolled in the directing faculty of the Institute of Arts.

In 1987, she met singer Brilliant Dadashova, who introduced her to composer Javanshir Guliyev. Soon, Zulfia Khanbabayeva began appearing on television, performing Guliyev's songs. In 1988, she became a laureate of the "Baku Autumn" competition for young performers. In 1989, she won the "Golden Autumn" competition, and in 1990, she won the "Odlar Yurdu" competition. In 1991, she participated in the "Novruz-91" Festival of Creative Youth held in Almaty.

In 1994, Khanbabayeva worked on a jazz-folk solo project for the ensemble "Aypara," led by Vagif Gerayzade. In 1995, she took a break from the stage due to personal issues.

Returning in 1998, she continued her solo career with the support of Vagif Gerayzade and her longtime friend Nigar Gadzhizade, who remains her producer to this day. In early 1999, Zulfia Khanbabayeva released her first successful single "Gecə" ("Night"). The eponymous album was released in February 2000, featuring successful songs such as "Gecikməyin sevməyə," "Demirəm," "Ürəyim," "Bu gecə," and others. She was awarded the "Humay" prize in 2000 for the project "Aləm oynasın" (duet with Fidan and Huraman Kasimova), and in 2001 for the music video of the song "Sən gedən günədən."

On December 26, 2000, Zulfia Khanbabayeva held her first solo concert at the Heydar Aliyev Palace, which was a great success. She received her third "Humay" prize for her second solo concert held on May 31, 2002, at the "Republic" Palace (now the Heydar Aliyev Palace). In the same year, she was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In May 2004, Khanbabayeva performed a solo concert at the Tofik Bakhramov Stadium, where Turkish singing sensation Tarkan also participated.

In the summer of 2005, with the support of Azercell, Khanbabayeva conducted a series of successful solo performances in various cities of Azerbaijan, with the program "Canım, Məmləkətim" ("My Dear Homeland"). Since late 2008, she has been working on her solo album, which is planned to be released in October 2009. The album will be titled "Deniz" ("Sea"), in honor of the singer's daughter, who was born on October 26, 2007, at Leyla Shikhlinskaya's clinic in Baku.

On September 17, 2008, President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan signed a decree awarding Zulfia Khanbabayeva the title of People's Artist of Azerbaijan. Alongside Khanbabayeva, other renowned artists such as Aygun Kazimova, Brilliant Dadashova, Nisa Gasimova, and others also received the title of "People's Artist."
