Biography of Zuzu Angel
Zuzu Angel, born Zuleika Angel Jones on June 5, 1921, in Curvelo, Minas Gerais, Brazil, was a Brazilian-American fashion designer. She grew up in Belo Horizonte and later settled in Bahia, where the culture and unique features of the state influenced her inner world and artistic style. In 1947, Zuzu moved to Rio de Janeiro, the cultural capital of Brazil.
Early Career
In the 1950s, Zuzu began experimenting with sewing, creating clothing items for her close relatives. Her passion for fashion led her to open a shop in Ipanema in the early 1970s, around the same time her designs began appearing on American runways. Her fashion shows showcased the richness of Brazilian culture, which helped establish Zuzu's name in the fashion world.
Resistance against Dictatorship
Zuzu gained further recognition after she emerged as a vocal opponent of the Brazilian military dictatorship when her son Stuart disappeared. In the 1970s, Stuart, who protested against the dictatorship as part of the student movement, was captured, tortured, and killed by agents of the Brazilian intelligence agency DOI-CODI. They declared Stuart missing, and Zuzu fought tirelessly to have her son's body returned to her. The United States Embassy, where her former husband and Stuart's father lived, supported her in this battle against the authorities.
Tragic Death and Legacy
Unfortunately, Zuzu's confrontation with the authorities ended in tragedy when she died in a car accident in 1976. Her son's body was never found. The investigation into Zuzu's death was carried out by the Commission for the Dead and Missing for Political Reasons, and the Brazilian government later acknowledged its involvement in her death.
In honor of Zuzu Angel and other mothers who were denied the opportunity to bury their children, Chico Buarque wrote a song called "Angélica" in 1977. Additionally, a tunnel in Rio de Janeiro connecting the affluent residential areas of Gávea and São Conrado was named after her. This was the site of the car accident that claimed Zuzu's life.
In 2006, a Brazilian film titled "Zuzu Angel," directed by Sergio Rezende, was released, depicting the life of the fashion designer. Patricia Pillar portrayed the main character, Zuzu Angel, and Daniel de Oliveira portrayed Stuart.
