Zvonimir Boban: A Croatian Football Icon

Zvonimir Boban is a renowned Yugoslav and Croatian footballer, sports journalist, and administrator. He played a pivotal role in Croatia's bronze medal victory at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and currently serves as the Chief Football Officer for Italian club AC Milan.

Early Career and Youth Success

Born in 1968, Boban made his professional debut in 1985 for Dinamo Zagreb. At the age of 18, he became the club's youngest ever captain, a record later broken by Niko Kranjcar in 2001. In 1987, Boban was part of the Yugoslavia U-20 team that won the FIFA World Youth Championship, where he played six games and scored three goals.

The Zagreb Incident and International Recognition

On May 13, 1990, Boban's involvement in a brawl between fans and police during a match between Dinamo Zagreb and Red Star Belgrade became a turning point in Yugoslav history. This incident highlighted the growing tensions within Yugoslavia and contributed to the outbreak of the Croatian Civil War. As a result, Boban was suspended for six months and missed the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

AC Milan and International Success

After a successful season with Dinamo Zagreb in 1990/91, Boban was transferred to AC Milan for a fee of €8 million. He initially played for Bari to adapt to Italian football, before becoming a regular starter for AC Milan in the following season. Boban played nine consecutive seasons for Milan, transforming from a reserve to one of the team's key players. In 2001, he was briefly loaned to Celta de Vigo in Spain, where he decided to retire from professional football at the age of 33.

National Team Career

With the Yugoslavia U-20 team, Boban won the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship, finishing as the second-best player of the tournament. He also represented the senior Yugoslavia national team from 1988 to 1990, making seven appearances and scoring one goal. After the breakup of Yugoslavia, he played 51 games and scored 12 goals for the Croatian national team between 1992 and 2002, including appearances at the FIFA World Cup and European Championship.

Post-Playing Career
