Early Life and Basketball Beginnings

Žydrūnas Ilgauskas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, on June 5, 1975. He began his basketball career in the youth system of Žalgiris Kaunas before playing for Atletas Kaunas.

NBA Draft and Rookie Season

Ilgauskas was selected with the 20th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He signed a multi-year contract with the team on July 1, 1996. An injury prevented him from playing in the 1996-97 season.

Breakthrough and All-Star Selections

In the 1997-98 season, Ilgauskas played in all 82 games, averaging 13.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks. He earned All-Rookie First Team honors, becoming only the third European to receive the accolade. He went on to sign a six-year, $70.9 million extension with the Cavaliers.

Injury Struggles and Return to Form

Unfortunately, injuries plagued Ilgauskas in the following seasons. He only played in 5 games in the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons combined. In 2000-01, he appeared in just 24 games before another injury ended his season prematurely.
