Biography of Aaron Funk
Early Life and Musical BeginningsAaron Funk, better known as "Venetian Snares," is a Canadian punk musician and leading figure in the breakcore genre. He was born on January 11, 1975, in Winnipeg, Canada. From a young age, Funk displayed a passion for creating music, experimenting with rhythmic sounds using scrap metal and anything else he could find. He soon began playing the guitar in local punk bands, further fueling his love for music.
Exploring New Possibilities
Funk acquired an Amiga 500 computer, which opened up new possibilities for music creation. One day, while recording a song with extremely fast drums, he stumbled upon a sound that resembled the noise of a pencil running across a blinds, echoing through a chaotic classroom. Combining these sounds, Funk named his project "Venetian Snares," a combination of "venetian blinds" and "snare drums."
Early Success and Collaborations
Funk recorded several demo tapes, some of which got lost or misplaced. However, in 1999, his first mini-album, titled "Greg Hates Car Culture," gained attention when it was released under the name "Venetian Snares." This caught the attention of Mike Paradinas from the label "Planet µ," who signed a contract with Funk. In 2001, their collaboration with "Speedranch" resulted in the release of "Making Orange Things."
By the end of 2002, Funk had released five more albums and began collaborating with various record labels such as "Hymen Records," "Addict Records," and "Sublight Records." Notable albums that garnered attention include "Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits 1972–2006" (2002) and "Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding" (2004). Additionally, his album "Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett," inspired by a trip to Hungary in 2005, gained critical acclaim.
Continued Success and Pseudonyms
In 2006, Funk released two albums, "Cavalcade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms" and "Hospitality." The following year, a companion album to "Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett" called "My Downfall (Original Soundtrack)" was released. In addition to performing under the name "Venetian Snares," Funk also produces music under various pseudonyms such as "Last Step," "Ventriloquist Snakes," "Senetian Vnares," "Vsnares," and "Snares," exploring genres such as IDM and acid.
Innovative Music and Live Performances
Funk's music often features unconventional time signatures such as 7/4, occasionally incorporating 9/4 and 11/4. His music is characterized by its aggressive nature, drawing influences from hardcore, breakbeat, and the complexities of life itself.
