Aaron Neville, an American singer, is often compared to Sam Cooke due to his distinctly refined vocal abilities, but he possesses his own voice and style. He is best known as part of the New Orleans sound of the Neville Brothers. In addition to his early R&B hit "Tell It Like It Is," only a few have heard his amazing early solo recordings. Many of Neville's early 60s recordings were produced and often written by Allen Toussaint - another talent that was only truly appreciated over time. Almost all of these details were overlooked by record companies, first Minit and then Parlo. Songs such as "She Took You for a Ride" and "You Think You're So Smart," made on the Parlo label, are considered masterpieces. While his recent work, including recordings with Linda Ronstadt, is designed for pleasant listening, they lack the undeniable persuasiveness of his early songs. Neville recently reissued his early albums, and it is important to hear the originals.
Aaron Neville's Diversification
Neville did not only swim in the "musical" waters of R&B. The 1993 Grand Tour included a remake of George Jones' song, bringing Neville to the country's attention. He announced that he would release a country-style album in 1994. Neville was also one of several R&B performers who collaborated with country stars for the Rhythm Country and Blues session. Neville also interacted with Trisha Yearwood and performed at the LP concert in Los Angeles in April 1994. The LP made history by debuting in the Top Ten on the pop, R&B, and country charts.
