Early Life and Activism

Abd el-Krim was born in Ajdir, Morocco, in 1882. He received his education in Spain and became a teacher and judge in Melilla. In 1914, he began editing the newspaper "Telegrama del Rif," which advocated for the expulsion of Spanish and French colonists from Morocco with the help of Germany.

Leader of the Rif Revolt

In 1919, Abd el-Krim fled to the mountains and became the leader of his tribe after his father's death. From 1920 to 1926, he led the Rif Revolt against both Spanish and French colonial forces. He established the Rif Republic, a военно-политическое объединение of 12 tribes, and became known as the "Berber Lion."

Alliance and Betrayal

Initially, France supported Abd el-Krim's struggle against Spain, hoping to consolidate its influence in Morocco. However, Abd el-Krim's ambition to expand his emirate into French-controlled territory led to tensions. In 1924, French General Lyautey fortified the Verga Valley, cutting off Abd el-Krim's food supply.

French Intervention and Defeat

In 1925, France launched an offensive against the Rif Republic. Despite Abd el-Krim's charismatic leadership and skillful tactics, the French army's superior firepower proved overwhelming. In 1926, he surrendered to the French and was exiled to Reunion Island.

Life in Exile

In 1947, Abd el-Krim was allowed to return to France on the condition that he cease political activity. However, he fled to Port Said and settled in Cairo, where he became the head of the Committee for the Liberation of the Arab Maghreb.

Legacy

Abd el-Krim's struggle against European colonialism inspired nationalist movements across Africa and the Middle East. His legacy as a charismatic leader and military strategist continues to be revered in both Morocco and beyond.
