Abdulaziz Abdul Ghani: A Distinguished Yemeni Politician
Early Life and EducationAbdulaziz Abdul Ghani was born in 1939 in Ibb, Yemen. In 1962, he graduated from the University of Colorado in the United States with a degree in economics.
Career in Academia and Government
Ghani's initial career involved teaching English and sociology in Aden from 1964 to 1967. He then entered politics, serving as Minister of Health of the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR) from 1967 to 1968.
In 1968, Ghani was appointed Director of the Yemen Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Sana'a. He subsequently held various economic leadership roles, including Minister of Economy (1968-1971) and Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen (1971-1975).
Prime Minister of Yemen
Ghani's political prominence rose when he became Prime Minister of the YAR on January 25, 1975. He served in this role until October 15, 1980. After a brief hiatus, he was reappointed Prime Minister from November 13, 1983 to May 22, 1990.
Vice President and Reunification of Yemen
In 1980, Ghani was elevated to the position of Vice President of the YAR. He played a significant role in the reunification of North and South Yemen in 1990, serving as Prime Minister of the unified country from October 6, 1994 to May 14, 1997.
Later Career and Death
Upon leaving government, Ghani became Chairman of the Consultative Council of the Yemeni Republic in 2003. His life was tragically cut short when he was assassinated in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on June 3, 2011. The attack occurred during a shelling of President Ali Abdullah Saleh's residence.
Personal Life
Ghani was married and had five sons and a daughter. He was an avid sports enthusiast.
