Abdurrahman Muis: Indonesian National Hero, Literary Pioneer
Abdurrahman Muis, born in Sungai Puar, West Sumatra, was a renowned Indonesian writer, journalist, and translator who played a pivotal role in the nation's struggle for independence from Dutch colonialism.
Early Life and Education
Muis studied medicine in Jakarta for three years but was forced to abandon his studies due to illness. He then joined the civil service before embarking on a career as a journalist where he became a vocal critic of Dutch colonial rule.
Literary Contributions
In 1928, Muis published his groundbreaking novel "Salah Asuhan" ("Misguided Education"), initiating the era of modern Indonesian realist literature. He also translated Western literary masterpieces into Indonesian, including Cervantes' "Don Quixote" (1923), Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1928), and Hector Malot's "Sans Famille" (1932).
Political Activism
Driven by his desire to contribute to Indonesia's political liberation, Muis joined the Islamic Union ("Sarekat Islam"). Recognising the futility of peaceful negotiation, he advocated for violent resistance against the colonial authorities. However, he later became a member of the Volksraad, a Dutch-established representative body.
Arrest and Imprisonment
In 1922, Muis participated in a strike in Yogyakarta, leading to his arrest and imprisonment in Garut, West Java. Despite his incarceration, he continued to write, producing works that inspired fellow nationalists.
Later Years and Legacy
Muis died in 1959 and was buried in Bandung. He left behind a rich literary and political legacy, having played a significant role in shaping modern Indonesian literature and contributing to the nation's eventual independence.
