Early Life and Education
Abdel Hamid Dbeibeh was born in Misurata, Libya, in either 1958 or 1959. He graduated from the University of Toronto in Canada with a degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in engineering.
Business Career
Dbeibeh returned to Misurata during a construction boom and became involved in politics as a confidant of the ruling Arab Socialist Union party. He gained the trust of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who appointed him in 2007 to head the state-owned Libyan Investment and Development Company, which was responsible for some of the country's largest public works projects, including housing developments in Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte.
Political Involvement
During his business career, Dbeibeh managed the football club Al-Ittihad. In 2020, he founded the Libya al-Mustaqbal (Libya of the Future) movement, which remained inactive in active politics.
Prime Minister of Libya
On February 5, 2021, Dbeibeh was elected head of a new government at the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) in Switzerland. He took office as Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity on March 15, 2021, with the primary task of holding parliamentary elections on December 24, 2021. Some media outlets have described him as a pro-Erdogan politician with close ties to Turkey.
Controversy and Legal Challenges
In September 2021, the Libyan House of Representatives passed a no-confidence vote on Dbeibeh's government. However, the Libyan High State Council ruled this act as invalid, arguing that the constitution does not provide for a process to dismiss the government.
