Prime Minister of Uzbekistan
Early Life and EducationAbdulaziz Aripov was born on May 24, 1961, in Tashkent, the capital of the Uzbek SSR. In 1983, he graduated from the Tashkent Electrotechnical Institute of Communications with a degree in telecommunications engineering.
Early Career in Communications
From 1983 to 1992, Aripov worked as an electronics engineer at the Tashkent telephone and telegraph station. Subsequently, he served as a chief specialist in the Ministry of Communications of the newly independent Republic of Uzbekistan until 1993.
Business and Government Roles
During the 1990s, Aripov held various positions in different sectors. He was the deputy director of the foreign trade firm "Uzimexaloqa" and held positions in the Ministry of Communications and the Uzbek Agency for Post and Telecommunications.
Rise to Prominence
In 2001, Aripov became the general director of the Uzbek Agency for Post and Telecommunications. In 2002, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and head of the Complex on Communications and Information and Telecommunications Technologies. From 2005, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and General Director of the UzASI, overseeing the Complex for Information Systems and Telecommunications.
Social and International Affairs
From 2009, Aripov's portfolio expanded to include social welfare, science, education, healthcare, and culture. He also became responsible for relations with CIS partners.
Political Tribulations
In 2012, Aripov was dismissed from his position as Deputy Prime Minister amid a conflict involving the cellular operator MTS-Uzbekistan. He subsequently taught as a senior lecturer at the College of Communications in Tashkent.
Return to Government
In 2016, Aripov was appointed Deputy Prime Minister for Youth Policy, Culture, Information Systems, and Telecommunications.
Prime Ministership
In December 2016, Aripov was nominated by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party as the candidate for Prime Minister. He was duly approved by Parliament and became the fourth Prime Minister of Uzbekistan.
Family and Academic Qualifications
Aripov is married and has five daughters. He holds a doctorate in economics and the academic rank of associate professor.
