Shavkat Mirziyoyev
Early Life and EducationShavkat Mirziyoyev was born on July 24, 1957, in Zomin District, Jizzakh Region, Uzbek SSR. His ancestry has been disputed, with some sources claiming he is ethnic Tajik. However, his official biography states his ethnicity as Uzbek, and his family has strong connections to the Mirtuppi clan, a lineage of landowners from Yahtan, Tajikistan.
Mirziyoyev's father, Miromon Mirziyoyev, was a medical doctor and beekeeper, while his mother, Marifat Mirziyoyeva, was a nurse who succumbed to tuberculosis while working at a tuberculosis dispensary.
Political Beginnings
After graduating from secondary school, Mirziyoyev moved to Tashkent, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Melioration (now Tashkent Institute of Engineers of Irrigation and Mechanization of Agriculture).
He joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s and was elected to the Supreme Council of the Uzbek SSR in 1990. After Uzbekistan gained independence in 1991, he became a member of the People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan (NDPU), the successor to the Uzbek Communist Party.
Political Rise
In 1992, Mirziyoyev was appointed Governor of Mirzo-Ulugbek District in Tashkent. He subsequently served as Governor of Jizzakh Region (1996-2001) and Samarkand Region (2001-2003).
On December 12, 2003, Mirziyoyev was appointed Prime Minister of Uzbekistan. During his tenure, he became a major political figure and a key confidant to President Islam Karimov.
Presidential Candidacy and Election
Following President Karimov's death in 2016, Mirziyoyev became Acting President. He was subsequently nominated as the candidate for the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan in the December 2016 presidential elections.
On December 4, 2016, Mirziyoyev was elected President of Uzbekistan with 88.61% of the vote.

As President, Mirziyoyev has implemented a number of reforms, including:
Liberalization of the economy and removal of exit visas
Introduction of biometric passportsAnticorruption measures, including the dismissal of corrupt officials in the прокуратура
Improved relations with neighboring countries, including Tajikistan
Personal LifeMirziyoyev is married to Ziroatkhon Makhmudovna Mirziyoyeva (nee Khoshimova). They have two daughters and a son. His son-in-law, Oibak Tursunov, is the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, while his other son-in-law, Otabek Shakhanov, is the President of the Triathlon and MMA Federation.
