Biography of Islam Karimov

Islam Karimov was the first President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. He was awarded the title "Uzbekiston Kahramoni" for his outstanding contribution to the establishment of a sovereign and independent Uzbekistan, the creation of a humane democratic state based on the rule of law, and ensuring civil peace and national harmony. He was also honored with the "Mustakillik" and "Amir Temur" orders.

Islam Abduqaniyevich Karimov was born on January 30, 1938, in Samarkand, in a family of civil servants. He graduated from the Central Asian Polytechnic Institute in 1960 and the Tashkent Institute of National Economy in 1967. He held a Doctor of Economic Sciences degree and was an academician of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Aviation and Aeronautics.

From 1960-1961, Karimov worked as an assistant master, master, and technologist at the Tashselmash Plant in Tashkent. From 1961-1966, he served as an engineer-designer and chief engineer at the Tashkent Aviation Production Association named after V.P. Chkalov.

Between 1966 and 1983, Karimov held various positions in the State Planning Committee of the Uzbek SSR, including chief specialist, assistant chairman, department head, head of department, deputy chairman, and first deputy chairman. From 1983-1986, he served as the Minister of Finance of the Uzbek SSR. In 1986, he became the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Chairman of the State Planning Committee of the Uzbek SSR. From 1986-1989, he was the First Secretary of the Kashkadarya Oblast Committee of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan. From 1989-1991, he held the position of First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan.

In 1990, Karimov became the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan. From 1991-1996, he was the Chairman of the People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan. In December 1991, he became the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In 1995, his presidential powers were extended until 2000 through a referendum held on March 26.

Islam Karimov was re-elected as the President of Uzbekistan for another 5-year term through the elections held on January 9, 2000. He was awarded the Orders of the Red Banner of Labor and Friendship of Peoples. He was also bestowed with the title "Hero of Uzbekistan" and awarded the Golden Star number one.

Karimov was married and had two daughters.
