Early Life and Education

In mid-1959, in the sultanate of Pahang, then part of the Malayan Federation, Tengku Abdullah was born as the fourth child of Sultan Ahmad Shah. He attended the elite Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, where he struck a lasting friendship with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who would later become the President of the United Arab Emirates.

Ruler of Pahang

In 2016, due to his father's declining health, Tengku Abdullah assumed the responsibilities of governing Pahang. The following year, Sultan Ahmad Shah relinquished his role as Deputy Supreme Ruler of Malaysia. Upon his father's abdication in January 2019, Abdullah II formally became the Sultan of Pahang, with his reign retroactively dating back to January 11, 2019.

Supreme Ruler of Malaysia

On January 31, 2019, Tengku Abdullah II was elected as the 16th Supreme Ruler of Malaysia by the Conference of Rulers, skipping the role of Deputy Supreme Ruler for the second time in Malaysian history. He assumed the post in the capital city on January 31, 2019, with the rank of Marshal of the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Field Marshal of the Malaysian Army, and Admiral of the Fleet of the Royal Malaysian Navy. His inauguration ceremony took place on July 30, 2019, commemorating his 60th birthday.

Military and Sporting Affiliations

Sultan Abdullah II serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces. He also holds leadership positions in various sporting organizations, including the Asian Hockey Federation, the Football Association of Malaysia, and the Asian Football Confederation.

Personal Life and Honors

The Sultan has been married twice, with his first wife being Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, the sister of the Sultan of Johor. He and his first wife have six children, while he has three daughters with his second wife, Che Puan Azizah binti Saruddin. Sultan Abdullah II has received numerous awards from Turkey, Malaysia, Pahang, and Brunei.
