Muhammad V: The Reign of Malaysia's 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong
Early Life and EducationMuhammad V, born on October 6, 1969, into the royal family of the Malaysian state of Kelantan, holds degrees from universities in Malaysia, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
Ascension to the Throne
Following his father's stroke in 2009, Muhammad V was appointed regent until his father's proclamation as Sultan in September 2010. In November 2011, he was elected Deputy Supreme Ruler of Malaysia for a five-year term.
Supreme Ruler of Malaysia
On October 14, 2016, the Conference of Rulers of Malaysia elected Muhammad V as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year term. He assumed office on December 13, 2016.
Political Significance
In 2018, after the parliamentary elections, Muhammad V appointed opposition leader Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister, marking a departure from past practices.
Abdication
Unexpectedly, Muhammad V abdicated from the throne on January 6, 2019, citing personal reasons. He remains the Sultan of Kelantan.
Controversies
Upon his accession as Sultan, Muhammad V faced challenges from his brother and father. However, the Federal Court and the Conference of Rulers recognized his legitimacy.
Personal Life
Muhammad V has been married twice. His first marriage to Tengku Zubaidah ended in divorce in 2008. In 2018, he married Oksana Voevodina, a Russian beauty queen, and they welcomed a son in 2019. Their marriage was dissolved in 2019.
