Biography of Mizan Abidin
Mizan Abidin was born in Istana Al-Muktafi, Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia, and is the eldest son of Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah and his second wife, Sharifah Nong Fatimah. He was born after Malaysia gained independence.
Early Life and Education
Mizan initially received his education in his homeland before moving to Australia and later to the United States. In 1988, he graduated from the Euro-American International University (also known as Alliance International University) in London, earning a bachelor's degree in International Relations. He also underwent military training at the Army Language School from November 2, 1982, to May 31, 1983, and later at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England. He was awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant and joined the Royal Cavalry.
Career
Following his military education, Mizan worked as an assistant tax collector in the Kuala Terengganu district for a year. In 1988, he became a state administrative officer in the State Economic Planning Unit (OGEP) in Wisma Darul Iman, Kuala Terengganu. In addition to his role in OGEP, Mizan also served as an assistant district officer for land supervision in the Kuala Terengganu Land Office.
Sultan of Terengganu and Yang di-Pertuan Agong
On November 6, 1979, Mizan became the Crown Prince of the Sultanate of Terengganu and on October 20, 1990, he ascended the throne as the Sultan of Terengganu. At the age of thirty-six, Mizan became the youngest ruler in the history of Malaysia. After the death of his father, he was reappointed as the Sultan of Terengganu on May 15, 1998. On March 4, 1999, he was officially crowned as the 16th Sultan of Terengganu. Mizan holds the records for the longest reign in both categories: as the Sultan of Terengganu and as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Personal Life
On March 28, 1996, Mizan married Sultanah Nur Zahirah, with whom he has two sons and two daughters.
