Abgar II, King of Edessa (68-53 BCE)
Abgar II, also known as Abgarus II, was the ruler of the Kingdom of Edessa from 68 to 53 BCE. During his reign, he participated in significant military campaigns and played a role in shaping the political landscape of the region.
Alliance with the Romans
In 64 BCE, Abgar II allied himself with Roman forces under the command of Lucius Afranius, a legate of Gnaeus Pompey. Together, they launched an invasion of Northern Mesopotamia, expanding Roman influence in the area.
Betrayal of Crassus
According to one account, Abgar II later turned against the Roman commander Marcus Crassus in 53 BCE. He allegedly lured Crassus's army into an open area during the Battle of Carrhae, where they were decisively defeated by the Parthians. However, Abgar did not benefit from the outcome of the battle, as he was overthrown by the Parthian king Orodes II that same year.
