Abraham Kuyper: Politician, Theologian, and Statesman
Early Life and EducationAbraham Kuyper was born into a Dutch Reformed Church minister's family. He received his early education at home and later attended the Leiden Gymnasium and Leiden University. In 1857, he earned his degree in literature and the following year, in philosophy. Kuyper also pursued studies in Arabic, Armenian, and physics. In 1862, he obtained his doctorate in theology with a dissertation on the differences in ecclesiastical views between John Calvin and Jan Laski.
Ministry and Marriage
In May 1862, Kuyper was ordained into the ministry and served as a Dutch Reformed Church pastor in Beesd. In the same year, he married Johanna Hendrika Schaay, with whom he had eight children.
Influence of Groen van Prinsterer
Around 1866, Kuyper began a correspondence with Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer, a prominent Anti-Revolutionary Party leader. Groen van Prinsterer greatly influenced Kuyper's political and theological perspectives.
Political Career
Kuyper became involved in politics and founded the Anti-Revolutionary Party. He served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1901 to 1905. As a politician, Kuyper advocated for the rights of religious minorities and the separation of church and state.
Theological Leadership
Kuyper played a significant role in the Dutch Reformed Church. He organized the "Grieving Church" movement in 1886, criticizing the increasing liberalism within the church. In 1880, he established the Free University of Amsterdam, a Reformed institution of higher learning.

Kuyper was a prolific writer and publisher. He founded the newspapers "Standaard" and "Heraut" to promote his political and theological views. He also published numerous books and tracts, including "Ons Program" and his writings on Polish Calvinist Jan Laski.
